Nico (@nic_the_) is very well known for his distinct lettering style, bold and unique with bright pops of colour. He will be conducting 3 different classes over the weekend with us in March all focused on lettering which is his expertise. Watercolour and Gouache Workshops with @paintstobrushes

We are super excited to announce that @paintstobrushes is coming to our studio to conduct 2 different classes with us! Known for her floral watercolour, beautiful colour palette and style, we can’t wait for you to join us for a Sunday of painting and fun with Farah. Here is the line up:

Introduction to Gouache

In this class you will learn how to set up your Gouache colour palette by mixing unique colours and apply them either dry or wet when painting your subjects. Learn to sketch lightly and loosely and paint your sketches by applying basic painting techniques such as wet on dry and layering. Learn how I apply darker layers to highlight shadows and using bleed-proof white ink to further enhance the subject. At the end of the class, you will apply the techniques learnt to paint subjects of your choice (my fav are painting cityscapes) that you can frame as home decor or gift them to your loved ones.

Floral Bouquet (Watercolor Workshop for Beginners - Intermediate)

In this class you will learn how to set up your watercolor palette by mixing unique colors and apply them either dry or wet when painting your subjects. Using the unique colors mixed, paint basic shapes and apply basic painting techniques such as wet on dry, wet on wet and layering. Explore brush strokes to paint popular bouquet flowers such as rose, lilies, peonies and more. Discover how I construct my floral bouquet painting from photo reference and combine all elements learnt in class to paint your own floral bouquet that you can frame as home decor or gift them to your loved ones.

Watercolour Dessert with Silver Yang

We’re finally bringing back watercolour classes to our studio and we’re so happy to have Silver Yang come and teach us how to illustrate and paint some delicious desserts.

In this workshop, you will explore the fundamental techniques and essence of watercolour painting with watercolorist Silver Yang, and bring home a beautiful piece of dessert artwork!

This workshop is suitable for ages 15 years old and above. The price includes the following: one pointed round watercolour brush, a palette, a watercolour paint set for the dessert, 300gsm watercolour paper), and a water container.

Modern Calligraphy

Calligraphy is both beautiful to look at and relaxing to write. However you may feel differently if you've been wanting to learn this letterform yet have no idea where to begin! Modern Calligraphy is less rigid compared to Copperplate Calligraphy, which may have made you hesitate signing up for our classes in the past.

Come along for an afternoon of calligraphy where, Pui Yee, will take you through the basics from basic strokes to forming letters and joining words to create beautiful pieces as she breaks down everything for you in simple steps, guiding you through this elegant, flowy letterform.

Brush Lettering with Sarah Lim

Sarah started calligraphy early 2016 after her sister took a calligraphy class and told her all about it. From then she was hooked. Nowadays you can find her lettering in her bullet journal, Traveler’s Notebook and even on glass. Calligraphy is a fun way to express your creative side!

In this class, Sarah will go over the basics of lettering, explaining the fundamental strokes, difference between different types of pens and papers and sharing her own personal tips and tricks that she’s learned over the years.

If you’ve always wanted to pick up calligraphy or are just interested in learning about this beautiful letterform, come along for an afternoon of fun and learning together.

Cute Character Doodle Workshop with Qiara Teor

Known for her super cute yet whimsical style of drawing characters, Qiara Teor, is no stranger in the art community. With a recent art exhibition and launch of her new Sketchbook Girls stickers, Qiara is making headway in this industry.

Semi-realistic Watercolour Workshop with Rachel Ajeng

Have you ever looked at flowers and somehow wished you could just paint them? Well, we’re bringing Rachel all the way from Indonesia just for this class where you will learn how to do just that. The pieces that Rachel creates that you can sift through on her Instagram page, @rachelajeng are so breathtakingly beautiful, elegant and dainty and we are so excited to bring her over to share her gift and knowledge with you. Having taught classes all over Indonesia and Singapore, she is no stranger to the community. With extensive knowledge and experience with all things watercolour, you’re in for a real treat with this class. Rachel will cover everything in depth from basic techniques, gradients and mixing different colour schemes (look at those dreamy pinks) before the real fun starts where you will tackle painting semi realistic flowers that you can use in your journals or just as a therapeutic hobby. We will be working with professional high quality watercolours during this class.

Creative Food Journaling Workshop

“I can’t draw!" is a phrase I hear so often! (this is why stamps are so popular, right?) 

Have you ever been at a cafe or space and wished you could capture the delicious food served to you and your feelings at that moment? A food journal is a visual diary; a combination of writing, drawing, painting, collage as a means to express yourself. Once you develop the habit of journaling, it becomes a way of life! It is a therapeutic activity that brings a lot of joy, suitable for people of all ages, regardless of skill level. Join us to explore your creativity and find out how you can document your life in various interesting ways.

About the workshop : 

This workshop is about getting inspired and having fun with paint. You will be learning techniques such as :- painting on paper, simple journaling, doodling, creative lettering, collage layout and layering! 

Here are some of the fun activities we'll be doing:

- paint your favourite food / desserts

- learn how you can document your days / weeks in creative ways

Artist Profile : 

Caryne Chua began journalling as a hobby, and it quickly became a way of life. Coupled with a knack for details and colour combination (she is a full-time interior designer!), she has developed her own unique style, with her works largely focusing on travel & cafe journaling. 

She travels extensively for inspiration as it opens up endless possibilities of subjects to paint.  

Her expertise is in food & dessert journaling and brush calligraphy. However, she also works on a wide range of media, with her portfolio consisting of mixed media art and coffee art. Caryne also has a coffee series art exhibition in Penang under her belt.

February Watercolour Workshop for beginners by Esther Geh

Smidapaper company is happy to announce a new addition to our workshop lineup; a watercolour workshop for beginners by Esther Geh. Esther has an art studio at Straits Quay and has been actively painting and teaching watercolour for more than 5 years. Here's what you will learn at this workshop (in Esther's words);

You will be learning basic watercolour techniques, eg.how to lay down washes, create form ( a more 3d look), and have control over your paint etc.
You will also be working with a limited palette of primaries only, so will learn how to mix colours, including a range of secondaries, greys and browns.
We will be working from photographs, so we’ll talk about using photos for references, but I’ll also talk about the benefits of working from life. 
I’ll also provide some tips on composition and how to plan a painting.

This workshop will kick off a series of classes which will guide beginner artists to develop their own style and to help them with pieces and subjects that they themselves choose.
